Marrakech or Fes in 2026? – Honest Comparison from Casablanca
Marrakech or Fes — which Moroccan city should you visit in 2026? Living right here in Casablanca, I travel to both regularly. One feels like a vibrant, non-stop festival full of color and sound. The other feels like walking through centuries of living history. This guide compares them honestly based on my own experiences: atmosphere, best time to go, where to stay, what to eat, how much it costs, getting around, safety tips and the best day trips from each city.

Best Time to Visit Marrakech or Fes
Spring (March–May) remains the favorite season for most visitors. Temperatures are comfortable (18–26°C). The gardens look spectacular and the crowds are still reasonable.
Fall (September–November) is very similar. You get pleasant days (20–30°C), fresh seasonal produce in the markets, and far fewer people than in summer.
Summer brings intense heat (35–45°C). Walking around midday can feel exhausting. Winter is much cooler (10–20°C). It’s quieter and more affordable, but you’ll need warm layers for the evenings.

Where to Stay in Marrakech or Fes
Marrakech has an enormous selection of riads. You’ll find everything from budget-friendly hidden gems to five-star properties with rooftop plunge pools and spa treatments. The Palmeraie area offers large resorts with gardens and private drivers back to the medina.
Fes riads usually feel older and more traditional. Many feature beautiful cedar woodwork, hand-laid zellige tiles and very calm inner courtyards. They give you the impression of living inside Moroccan history.
If you want resort-style comfort and lots of amenities, Marrakech is the stronger choice. If you prefer authenticity and intimacy, Fes riads are hard to beat. Browse options on Booking.com or read our Best Riads Guide.

Things to Do, Eat & Shop
Marrakech keeps you busy from morning to night. Start at Jemaa el-Fna square, visit Majorelle Garden for a peaceful break, enjoy rooftop dinners with city views, and spend hours bargaining in the souks for spices, lamps and leather goods.
Fes moves at a slower pace. The highlight for many is watching the dye vats at Chouara Tannery. You can also explore beautifully tiled madrasas and small artisan workshops where people still make copper trays and ceramics the traditional way.
Food-wise, Marrakech offers more street-food variety: grilled meats, fresh juices, snails, and tagines everywhere. Fes tends to serve richer, more home-style versions of the same dishes — often in small family restaurants rather than big tourist spots. Shopping in Marrakech feels more commercial; Fes souks give you a better chance of finding genuine handmade pieces at fairer prices after bargaining.

Costs, Access & Practical Tips for 2026
Quick notes for next year:
- Marrakech is typically 20–40% more expensive than Fes for similar quality riads and meals.
- Marrakech airport offers many more direct international flights than Fes.
- The Fes medina is hilly and uneven — comfortable walking shoes are essential.
- Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) in religious areas of both cities.
- Always drink bottled water and choose busy restaurants for street food.
- Support local families by booking riads and restaurants run by Moroccans.
Best Day Trips from Marrakech or Fes
Marrakech is the easiest starting point for High Atlas mountain hikes, Ourika Valley waterfalls and glamping in the Agafay desert — all reachable within 1–2 hours.
Fes opens up the northern and central regions: cedar forests in the Middle Atlas, the cool mountain town of Ifrane, the blue streets of Chefchaouen, and the Roman ruins of Volubilis.
Many people combine both cities. The train journey between Marrakech and Fes is comfortable and offers beautiful scenery. Check current timetables on ONCF.
Final Recommendation: Marrakech or Fes?
Choose Marrakech if you want energy, lots of luxury options and straightforward day trips. Choose Fes if you prefer authenticity, fewer tourists and a deeper cultural experience.
I personally go back and forth depending on my mood: Marrakech when I want excitement, Fes when I need calm and reflection. The smartest plan for many visitors is to see both — the train ride is easy and scenic.
